As a city, Hangzhou has survived rapid modernization and development，but the problem of finding a way to infuse the greyed historic underbelly with new life and effectively unite with the dazzling developed city frontier remains a challenge to Hangzhou and her residents. Dongxinhe Creativity Park stands at number 139 Liuhe Road on the former grounds of the Number 522 Post and Telecommunications Depot, which was once a star Hangzhou enterprise - much like Alibaba today.

Fifty-odd years ago, sixty-one buildings and some thousand-odd towering old trees made up the sprawling industrial park grounds. Today these same grounds have transformed into a different kind of space. Designers and artists of a new generation have flocked in thick and fast and taken over, giving the park an injection of vital creative energy from within.

This week, let TA be your guiding hand, unlocking the door to the site of Hangzhou's hidden renaissance.  You've been to the clubs and had the drink and food, so step beyond – push through into the creative heart of Hangzhou, investigate the artists' park, and discover the B-side to life in Hangzhou!

What will we learn and experience?

1.Take a guided tour through the most intriguing museum of its type in all of China, seeing the 'Time is a gift' exhibition at the industrial antique light museum.

When we think back on life experiences, on the people and things you've met and seen over the last few years, or stories you've heard, there's one impression we all seem to share – that‘time’is a truly peculiar thing. The exhibition primarily displays electronic antiques from the American 'Electric Age' (1860-1930) and includes a number of installation artworks.

Every item we see here is true antique -be it the furniture, lamp arms or the installed artworks – whether they found their way here from Hollywood, castles and old farmhouses -each is a genuine relic of an age past that has stood the tests of time to be here today. Hand-blown glass lampshades, a child’s bike complete with wound suspension springs, carefully mounted photo albums …. are among the items meticulously selected and arranged to give you the looking glass you need to spy into the care of craft that defined this age past and feel that odd sense of all the years they’ve seen.

2.Switch mindsets. Now you’re investigating. Two people to a team, the group will break up and scatter into and around through the grounds to examine and get a grasp on the artistry and artist’s spaces, your goal - to piece together the stories of the artists that brought this renaissance to Hangzhou. An hour later you’ll be back at ARTISTSAN with whatever knowledge you’ve gained and pictures taken, where you’ll start to share: to moments, and over a coffee, with your group！The team who shares the story and photos that leaves the deepest impression on the others gets two 88RMB Hong Bao’s!

Beside ARTISTSAN, the Dongxinhe Creative Park has sixty other similar buildings and the ‘Line Park’ to explore. If you’re into art, then get in and find an opening to strike up a conversation with a resident artist and talk creativity. If you’re looking to purchase some new digs with a bit of artistic flavor, the park’s also got you covered.
